Category: Herbs that cool and transform phlegm heat

Properties: Sweet cool

Western Functions: Demulcent, nutritive, alterative,diuretic, emollient, vulnerary, laxative

Energetic Functions: Transforms hot phlegm, Nourishes Lung yin, Tonifies Stomach yin and clears Stomach fire, Clears damp heat in the lower burner, Promotes lactation, Stops bleeding.

Uses:

1) Transforms hot phlegm:

Bronchitis with sticky yellow phlegm, pneumonia.

2) Nourishes Lung yin:

Tuberculosis, pertussis, pneumonia, dry cough, night sweats, five heart heat, small rapid pulse

3) Nourishes Stomach yin and clears Stomach fire:

Acid reflux, large appetite, mouth ulcers, stomatitis, gingivitis, night sweats, constipation

4) Clears damp heat in the lower burner:

Cystitis, UTI

Enteritis, dysentery

5) Promotes lactation:

Insufficient breast milk

6) Stops bleeding:

Kidney stones, blood in fluids.

Part used: Root

Traditional combinations:

Combinations:With Glycirrhiza glabra and Marrubium for bronchitis with sticky cough.

With Symphytum for gastric and duodenal ulcers

Caution: None noted

Preparation: Cold infusion or fresh root tinture

Dosage: 30 grams in cold infusion

Notes: One of the best treatments for sore throat. Cold infusion. Drink as needed.
