Medicine at your Feet

Everyone thinks Hawaii looks really pretty and natural but ... it's all ecological kitsch. It's the aesthetic equivalent of a painted velvet image of Elvis Presley. - - Fred Kraus, Zoologist

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in time of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality. - - Dante Alighieri, poet (1265-1321)

Honokowai Cultural Overlay
Restoration Project at Ka'anapali 2020

The Honokowai Cultural Overlay stabilization project is a component of Ka`anapali 2020, which includes restoration and preservation of an ancient farming archeological site, as well as a Multi-Cultural Center. The project is supported by businesses, organizations and the people of Maui. Steady progress is being made at the work site.

The Hawaii State Archaeological Society, with more than 20 archaeologists, has inspected the project. They all felt Honokowai sites were among the best projects currently in the state. Many of them wanted to work with the Overlay team. They pointed out possible burials, house sites, trails, auwai, heiaus, shelters, and were interested in the land court award names.

The Multi-Cultural Committee extends its appreciation for the help received from Alexander & Baldwin to purchase tools; Ken Ota of Irrigation Systems, Inc. for 1600 feet of two-inch polyethylene waterlines; Jan Dapitan of Community Work Day for irrigation lines, valves, transportation; 14 Americorps workers for five days; and James Carpio of Jay's Nursery for flat bed truck transportation and  agricultural supplies.

Join us on Saturdays. The community is encouraged to participate in this special place. Families, children and elders are always welcome. Bring lunch, water, gloves, hand tools, hats and repellent.

Meet at the AmFac parking lot office area and leave for the work site by 9:30 a.m. The day usually ends at 2:00 p.m. Directions: Go past the stop light at Ka`anapali Parkway, take a left on Keka`a Drive, just past the golf cart overpass, then left at the stop sign and left again.  Amfac parking lot is on the right, just mauka of the Route 30 overpass.
