My Teachers

Keoki Sousa studied Asian philosophy at San Jose State University and educational psychology at Stanford University.

Since returning home to Maui in 1989, he has studied under Na Kupuna (elders and ancestors) who have shared with him their knowledge and wisdom. He has been encouraged by them to perpetuate the traditional practices of na kupuna. He facilitates ongoing classes in traditional Hawaiian healing practices and la‘au lapa‘au (medicinal plants and herbs) the first Monday of each month in Kahului. He also offers non-credit classes in Hawaiian studies in the Hawaii Pacific University Elderhostel Program and in the Maui Community College PACE program.

He currently serves as president of the Kahuna La‘au Lapa‘au O Maui, Inc., a non-profit association of traditional practitioners, and the Community Garden at Ma‘alaea, Inc., a non-profit educational organic and botanical garden.
